How to type an Alt code

  1. 1

    Turn on Num Lock.

  2. 2

    Hold the left Alt key.

  3. 3

Type every digit on the numeric keypad.

  4. 4

Release Alt to insert the character.

Alt0151

Important: the main number row usually does not work. Codes with a leading zero below follow Windows-1252; another system locale or app can produce a different character.

Compatibility

Why the same code can behave differently

Codes with a leading zero

This table documents the common Western Windows-1252 mapping. Other Windows system locales can use a different legacy code page for values above 127.

Codes without a leading zero

These historical sequences come from an OEM character set. They are included as familiar shortcuts, but modern apps and non-US code pages may interpret them differently.

Unicode is the stable identity

Unicode code points do not change with the legacy code page. When an Alt sequence fails, copy the character, use Character Map, or use the app's Unicode input method.

FAQ

Questions about Alt codes

How do I enter an Alt code in Windows?

Turn Num Lock on, hold the left Alt key, type every digit on the numeric keypad, and release Alt. The number row above the letters usually does not work.

Why is the leading zero important?

A leading zero selects the Windows code-page method. A sequence without zero uses the older OEM method, so the same number can produce a different character.

Why does an Alt code produce the wrong character?

Alt-code output can depend on the app, keyboard language, active Windows and OEM code pages, and whether the program handles text as Unicode.

Do Alt codes work on a laptop?

They work only when the laptop exposes a numeric keypad, sometimes through Num Lock and Fn. If it has no keypad mode, use Character Map or copy the symbol from this table.

Are Alt codes the same as Unicode codes?

No. Alt+0151 is a legacy input sequence for an em dash in Windows-1252, while U+2014 is the stable Unicode code point for that character.
